Doak Praises Approval of Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, Legislation Requiring
Separate Abortion Coverage
Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John Doak today praised the House and Senate for its approval of and Gov. Mary Fallin for signing HB 1888, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and SB 547, which ensures that standard health insurance policies sold in Oklahoma do not include elective abortion coverage.
Concerning HB 1888, Doak said, “This bill is another important step in protecting Oklahoma’s future. The idea of terminating a life is bad enough and doing so in a way that is tremendously painful to the victim of the abortion is simply horrifying.
“Medical professionals are finding new cures everyday for difficult diseases and many loving families are waiting to adopt children. Fourteen years ago, my wife and I learned that our then unborn daughter was afflicted with a congenital heart disorder. One option with which we were presented was aborting her. My wife and I chose life and Kasey is a blessing to us every day.
“I applaud the House and Senate for passing this important measure and Gov. Mary Fallin for signing it today.”
Regarding SB 547, the Insurance Commissioner said, “I am adamantly pro-life and as the chief insurance regulator this new law bridges an important gap for people like me. No longer will we be subsidizing elective abortions of those who purchase the same health plans. They will have to purchase supplemental coverage with a separate premium for those services that so many of us oppose.
“I am deeply grateful to Sen. Anthony Sykes and Rep. Mike Ritze for authoring this great piece of pro-life legislation and to Gov. Mary Fallin for signing it into law.”
