OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak learned about the lifesaving treatments offered at the Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma on Friday. Hospital administrators invited Doak to tour the facility to promote a collaborative effort to improve health care for Oklahomans.
“The Stephenson Cancer Center is an incredible facility,” said Doak. “The work they do there is truly amazing. I was honored to meet some of the passionate doctors and staff members who strive to improve treatments and therapies for cancer patients. They literally save lives every day.”
During the visit, Doak learned about the Stephenson Cancer Center’s mission to extend the lives of cancer patients. He also toured the state-of-the-art facility, which features natural light, original art, bright exam rooms and a healing garden to help put patients at ease. Doak ended the tour with a look at the MEVION S250, the newest FDA-approved proton therapy system acquired by the facility in May.
“We appreciate Commissioner Doak’s interest in the Stephenson Cancer Center, which brings patient-centered care and access to cutting-edge clinical trials close to home and raises the standard of cancer care in Oklahoma,” said Director Robert S. Mannel.
In 2001, the Oklahoma Legislature mandated that OU provide statewide leadership in cancer research, prevention, education, and treatment. The Cancer Center’s mission is to improve and extend the lives of cancer patients through comprehensive care, clinical research, public awareness and education. The Cancer Center also serves as a statewide resource for patients, researchers, health professionals and communities.
