OKLAHOMA CITY – Due to a growing number of reports of fraud targeting Oklahoma’s senior population, the Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) is holding a series of educational conferences across the state. Those who attend the half-day events will learn how to spot, avoid and fight fraud. “WhoDunIt? Investigating Fraud,” will be held in Midwest City, Lawton, Ardmore, Enid, Tulsa and Idabel.
“It is unfortunate to know that no one is safe from fraud and scams, including the senior citizens of our state, but we are determined to put tools in the hands of Oklahomans to help defend against this criminal activity,” said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. “These conferences are extremely important and helpful to seniors because they are taught how to recognize a scam and then shown what to do and who to contact.”
The conference topics include: Medicare Fraud, Funeral Home Trust Fraud, Contractor Fraud, Postal Fraud and Investment Fraud. Participants will also attend a “Fraud Fashion Show,” featuring local law enforcement and utility workers in their official uniforms explaining what they do during a legitimate home visit. Each conference is free for senior adults and includes breakfast or lunch. There is a $30 fee for insurance and law enforcement professionals seeking Continuing Education credit. The events are funded, in part, by the Administration on Community Living’s Senior Medicare Patrol grant.
